Background

The scientific Equipment Development Institute (SEDI) – formerly Federal Science Equipment Manufacturing Center (FSEMC) Enugu is one of the outfits of National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI). In line with the NASENI initiative, the institute’s current mandate aims at developing products and technologies related to scientific Equipment and other technical items including machines and passing same on to the private sector for local mass production and commercialization. This is in addition to helping local industries in the areas of equipment maintenance, local manufacturing of spare parts, machine design and machine building.

History

Initially, the project was given rise to, by the Federal Executive Council in 1978, which mandated the federal ministry of education to provide funds for setting up the center under the technical guidance and leadership of prof. Gordian Ezekwe who handled the overall supervision from factory design and construction to equipment selection/installation and staff training. The first phase of the project was commissioned on 11th May 1992; by the then head of state, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, while the second phase is yet to commence. The factory which is a five (5) block multi product manufacturing complex with more than 10,000sq meters under roof currently has product range in excess of three hundred and seventy (370) items. This range mainly aims at conveying science equipment as well as other general needs in the educational sector and the industrial education level led to the development/manufacture of relative advanced products such as Transformer Trainers, Power Units, Mobile Internet Unit, etc. All indication confirm that this progressive trend will continue. The setting up of the new Unit for machine design and machine building has expanded the activities of the institute to accommodate the local construction of some industrial machine for SMEs and other public sector establishment.
