The economic growth and development of a nation is unarguably tied to her local production capability and usage of such products because it brings about job creation, development of industries and raw materials, increased revenue generation and improved Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Premised on the above understanding is what is driving the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) to be at the forefront of driving innovations geared towards industrialisation and national economic growth through its Development Institutes spread across Nigeria’s six geo-political zones.
The Agency has embraced Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model for turning Nigeria’s industrial ambitions into reality, partnering local and international manufacturing companies and technical partners to give nerve to industrial manufacturing and commercialization of products.
In key economic sectors, NASENI has collaborated with both local and international partners to solve problems that have long held the country back. One of these is the partnership with Portland Gas Limited to establish Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion and refilling centres across Nigeria.
The Agency in February 2024 joined hands with TROMENT Limited to establish a vaccine production company, NASENI-TROMENT biotechnology facility at Idu Industrial Area, Abuja. This factory which will commence commercial operations, will focus on developing, producing and commercializing high-quality Rapid Diagnostic Test kits (RDT) for a wide range of diseases, including Malaria, Hepatitis, Yellow Fever, Chlamydia, HBV, HIV, Meningitis, Zika, and other emerging health concerns.
In the agriculture sector, the Agency is collaborating with Mechanisation Equipment Company of Africa (MECA) Limited, to revive abandoned tractors scattered across Nigerian states. In June the partnership brought back to life 375 disused tractors in Borno State so that farmers can access tractors for use in their farms.
Agricultural productivity is also expected to receive a major boost from NASENI’s collaboration with an Indonesian consortium, PT Saputra Global Harvest, to produce coal-based fertilizer from Nigeria’s vast coal deposits. This will turn locally available coal into high-quality fertilizer, cutting costs and making the fertilizers accessible to farmers at affordable cost to increase crop yields and ensure food security.
Furthermore, the Agency partnered Caverton Helicopters to manufacture drones under the NASCAV project for border surveillance, crop monitoring, and potential for disaster response. The ambition is not just to manufacture for domestic use but also to make Nigeria a hub for drone technology in West Africa and reduce capital flight.
To support digital inclusion, enhance teaching and learning, and create thousands of tech-related jobs, NASENI partnered with IMOSE Technologies Limited, a Nigerian information technology company to manufacture computers such as laptops, desktops, and tablets designed specifically for local conditions with long battery life and rugged hardware that can withstand heat and dust.
Under the leadership of the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive of NASENI, Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, the Agency’s has over 40 market-ready products that are placing Nigeria on the global map technologically. It has been at the forefront of local production and with its strategy-focused group meetings on Made-in-Nigeria products in almost all the 36 states of the federation featuring stakeholders from various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and the Organized Private Sector (OPS).
Recently, the Honourable Minister of Trade, Industry and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, who paid a visit to the Agency, commended NASENI’s transformational strides after inspecting NASENI facilities, including the NASENI Innovation Hub, NASENI technology site at the Abuja Technology Village (ATV), the NASENI-TROMENT facility and another facility at Abuja Technology Park, Idu Industrial Area.
The visit was part of a broader effort by the Ministry to assess local industrial capacity and see high-impact projects that are accelerating the Federal Government’s ‘Nigeria First Policy’, an agenda focused on boosting domestic production, encouraging local consumption and creating jobs through industrialisation.
She also took a ride alongside the EVC/CEO in NASENI’s anti-ballistic missile amoured vehicle. At the NASENI-TROMENT Biotechnology Laboratory, she saw a production line capable of manufacturing 2,000 diagnostic kits per hour with plans for continental exports under the African Continental Free Trade Zone Area (AfCFTA).
“What I am seeing today is not in terms of intents, not in terms of Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs), not in terms of agreement or prospective investors but I have seen actual 100 per cent made-in-Nigeria products. I have seen happy investors; I have seen investors who were pushed to work quickly. I have seen investors who are setting the pace in the country, in the region and on the global patterns, leading the way, “she added.
The Minister stressed that state governments, ministries and agencies must also commit to buying locally produced goods that the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) has provisioned to support Nigerian manufacturers like NASENI. “We are intentional in government. Local content is not optional-it is a responsibility. What I have seen here aligns perfectly with our trade, investment and industrialisation goals,” She emphasized.
Mr. Khalil said, “The facilities you have seen are just a fraction of our network; we have 18 others nationwide and plan to build 100 more.” One central part of NASENI’s strategy is domestication-producing goods that meet high global quality standards and local market need.
The Agency’s NASENI Solar Energy Limited (NSEL), a wholly-owned solar panels manufacturing plant located in Karshi, FCT Abuja, in addition to the Renewable Energy Park at Gora, Nasarawa State and dozens of Development Institutes in various state, are testaments of the Federal Government’s zeal to entrench industrialization in the country.

NASENI-PICTT, Brazil’s CAMPO Sign Deal to Boost Food Security
Nigeria and Brazil have taken a major step in strengthening bilateral cooperation with the signing of a landmark agreement on Irrigation Project. The two countries signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s official visit to Brazil.
The agreement, sealed between Nigeria’s National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure designed programme for Innovative Clean Technology Transfer (NASENI–PICTT) and Brazil’s CAMPO, seeks to transform Nigeria’s agricultural sector through the deployment of advanced irrigation systems, modern farming technologies, and sustainable practices across designated Agro-Production Zones in Nigeria.
The project is designed to boost food security, create employment opportunities, and stimulate rural economic growth, representing a significant stride in Nigeria’s agricultural and industrial development agenda by the president.
The partnership also highlighted the growing diplomatic and economic ties between Nigeria and Brazil, opening doors for broader collaborations in other sectors of the Nigerian economy.

CNG: NASENI Is Making Life Easier for Nigerian Citizens-House of Reps Speaker
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has commended NASENI for promoting affordable and cleaner energy solutions through the establishment of NASENI-Portland CNG Conversion, Training Centre and Refill Station, Kubwa, Abuja.
The Speaker represented by Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh while commissioning the NASENI-Portland CNG Hub noted that the initiative was timely and impactful, saying “Energy transitions are never just about technology, they are about the quality of life for our people. We must commend the leadership of NASENI for making life easier for Nigerian citizens.”
While urging Nigerians to embrace the energy transition process, Hon. Abbas emphasized that such change takes time but is essential. Citing examples from Argentina, Pakistan, and Iran countries which have successfully converted millions of vehicles to CNG, he stressed Nigeria’s potential to lead Africa in CNG adoption.
Delivering a goodwill message on behalf of special guest of honour, the Chief of Staff to the President, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila represented by the Special Adviser to the President on Energy, Olu Verheijen said, “The NASENI–Portland partnership is a clear example of how the private sector plays a vital role in driving our nation’s economic growth and development.
“Our role as government is to act as a catalyst, unlocking private sector expertise and capital to deliver meaningful results for the Nigerian people,” she stated, adding that the pace set by NASENI under Mr. Halilu’s leadership should serve as a model for other agencies across the country, he said.
The Executive Vice Chairman/CEO, NASENI, Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, in his welcome address, said this facility, with its CNG Conversion Centre, Training Centre, and CNG Gas Refill Station, is part of our ongoing commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President for a diversified, sustainable, and industrially vibrant economy.
“Our plan is ambitious: to replicate these facilities across all 36 states and the FCT, making it possible to convert every vehicle in Nigeria to CNG in the coming years. This daughter station represents our commitment to bringing CNG technology closer to the people, breaking monopolies to improve service quality and affordability; and reducing bottlenecks and long queues for CNG users.
Halilu said the benefits are undeniable: lower fuel costs, cleaner air, better engine performance, stronger energy security, and sustainable jobs for our youth. “Last year, we commissioned our flagship CNG Conversion, Filling, and Training Centre in Utako, proving what is possible when innovation meets determination.
“Today, we are expanding that vision. With the capacity to convert up to 20 vehicles a day, this daughter station will make CNG more accessible, more affordable, and more convenient for everyday Nigerians.
He said over the past year, the Agency has trained 30 Nigerian engineers from across all geo-political zones in CNG conversion, auto maintenance, and clean energy technologies, representing a new generation of home-grown experts who will take this innovation to every corner of the country.

He disclosed that NASENI currently has over 40 market-ready products capable of competing favourably in the global market, with more innovations underway.

Innovation Assessment and Awards Committee Sensitizes Staff on Criteria

The committee on NASENI Innovation Assessment and Awards has held a sensitization session to enlighten staff of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure at the headquarters, Abuja on the criteria for the initiative.
In his welcome address, the Coordinating Director, Science Infrastructure Directorate, Professor Umar Ibrahim Gaya, represented by the Deputy Director in the directorate, Mr. Kayode Oladipo, commended the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive of NASENI, Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu for setting up the awards for NASENI staff system-wide to showcase their innovative ideas.
He also commended the committee for their commitment in ensuring that the programme is successful while urging members of staff to take maximum advantage of the initiative for their own good and to the benefit of the nation.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the committee and Director, Manufacturing Services, Engr. Dr. Olasupo Olayode Adesola, highlighted the significance of the programme, emphasizing its potential to drive innovation and excellence within the Agency and the society at large.
While emphasizing that the committee is dedicated to promoting innovation, assessing and recognizing outstanding achievements, and awarding excellence within NASENI, he noted that their collective expertise and commitment will drive the Agency’s vision and mission, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence.
A member of the committee, Engr. Odii Daniel Ogbonnaya, in a presentation said a portal would be unveiled soon for participating staff to make their entries adding that submission requirements include: Needs Assessment document clearly identifying the problem which the innovation addresses.
Other requirements include: a five (5) slide PowerPoint presentation outlining the concept, implementation and potential impact; and an optional 3-minute video pitch demonstrating the product or idea. Participation categories include: Institution-based, Joint/Cross-Institution, and Individual participation.
Thematic areas for participants include: Engineering Design, Product Packaging, Software Development, Renewable Energy, Nanotech & Advanced Materials, Agriculture, Medical & Allied Products and Marketing Strategies. The programme is designed to capture and advance ideas. Entries are to align with NASENI goals and address real-world challenges.
Goodwill messages came from Engr. Dr. Gbenga Olusunle, Engr. Dr. Patrick Okwu, Prof. Abdulmalik Onuwe and President, Technical Staff Association of NASENI(TSAN), Engr. Dr. Sayeed Shuaibu, who all appreciated the EVC/CEO for the initiative and urged staff to showcase their talents through the initiative.

The committee on NASENI Innovation Assessment and Awards visited several Institutes of the Agency spread across the country to sensitize and mobilize them to participate in the forthcoming NASENI and Institutes Staff Innovation Competition.
Representatives of Institutes in the geo-political who attended the Kano Cluster meeting at the Hydraulic Equipment Development Institute (HEDI), Kano include the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Development Institute (AMTDI), Jalingo, Taraba state; Heavy Machinery and Equipment Development Institute (HEMEDI), Bauchi; Engineering Materials and Equipment Development Institute (EMEDI), EMEDI, Katsina; and Aeronautics and Air Vehicle Development Institute (AAVDI), Kaduna.
The Committee also moved to the South-East where the Scientific Equipment Development Institute, (SEDI), Enugu played host to members of staff from Electrical Development Institute (ELDI), Awka and National Engineering Design Development Institute (NEDDI), Nnewi.
The Committee from Enugu moved to the South-west, where the Engineering Materials Development (EMDI), Akure played host to staff the Prototype Engineering Development Institute (PEDI), Ilesha and NASENI Technology Linkage Office (NTLO), Lagos.
The last port of call for the Committee was the North-Central where the Scientific Equipment Development Institute (SEDI), Minna where staff from the Power Electrical and Equipment Development Institute (PEEMADI), Okene converged for the sensitization programme.

NASENI Sensitises Staff on Hydrogen Energy for Technological Innovations

The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has reaffirmed its commitment to global efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions by embracing hydrogen energy for technological innovations.
Deputy Director, Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Coordinator, Hydrogen Economy, Engr. Dr. Emmanuel Ajani, disclosed this during sensitization training for NASENI staff on Monday, 25th August 2025, at the Agency’s headquarters in Abuja.
Dr. Ajani explained that the hydrogen economy represents a new global direction towards decarbonisation, offering a cleaner energy alternative capable of reducing industrial pollution and ensuring a safer environment for human existence. “Hydrogen energy has been proven to be a reliable and sustainable energy source,” he noted.
He further stated that Nigeria’s oil and gas sector has already begun exploring hydrogen energy opportunities, stressing the importance of NASENI staff embracing the initiative both for national development and personal economic empowerment. “NASENI’s priority is to drive the technological innovations behind hydrogen energy adoption and channel them into boosting Nigeria’s economy”, he added.
Dr. Ajani also urged participants to actively contribute ideas on how best to position NASENI at the forefront of Nigeria’s economic transformation. The sensitization programmes featured an interactive question and answer session and ended with a group photograph.

NASENI, Haier to Produce Smart Appliances and Renewable Energy Systems in Nigeria
The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has sealed a groundbreaking partnership with Haier, one of the world’s leading smart appliance manufacturers, to produce hi-tech appliances and renewable energy systems locally for Nigerian homes and businesses.
This collaboration will see NASENI and Haier co-develop products such as smart refrigerators, inverters, and solar kits items. Nigeria currently spends over $2 billion importing each year, with China supplying about 57 per cent of the total.
According to NASENI’s Executive Vice Chairman/CEO, Khalil Suleiman Halilu, the new venture is part of the agency’s drive to boost local manufacturing, create jobs, and make modern technology affordable and accessible to Nigerians. “We’re now building locally to create jobs, transfer knowledge, and deliver affordable, proudly Nigerian innovations nationwide,” Halilu said.
Producing these appliances in Nigeria will reduce the country’s dependency on imports, save foreign exchange, and stimulate local industries. It will also help develop skills in advanced manufacturing and renewable energy technologies.
With renewable energy systems like solar kits and inverters in the mix, the partnership also aims to address Nigeria’s electricity challenges, providing reliable and sustainable power options for homes and businesses.
The EVC has revealed that national showrooms will soon be launched, giving Nigerians the opportunity to see, test, and experience these locally produced innovations before purchase. Halilu expressed deep appreciation for Haier’s commitment to the partnership, calling it “a shared vision to empower Nigerians through technology.”
The rollout of these products is expected to make modern appliances more affordable, encourage “Made in Nigeria” pride, and open up thousands of direct and indirect jobs in the manufacturing, distribution, and after-sales service sectors.
Industry watchers say the NASENI–Haier partnership could mark a turning point in Nigeria’s domestic manufacturing sector, proving that with the right partnerships, the country can produce world-class products locally.

EMDI Concludes 3-Day Workshop on Microstructural and Mechanical Analysis of Engineering Materials

The Engineering Materials Development Institute (EMDI) Training Committee recently concluded a 3-day workshop and hands-on training on “Microstructural & Mechanical Analysis of Engineering Materials.” The workshop, which was organized by the Institute’s Training Committee brought together Masters and PhD students, professionals from tertiary institutions, organizations and research institutions.
In her opening address, EMDI Overseeing Officer, Mrs. Fausat Olumide Yusuf emphasized the significance of understanding microstructural and mechanical properties of engineering materials in today’s technological advancements. She highlighted that the workshop provided a platform for participants to gain hands-on experience and insights into the latest techniques and tools used in materials analysis.
There was PowerPoint presentations and hands-on practical sessions conducted at the Institute’s state-of-the-art laboratories. The sessions were divided into three days, focusing on: Microstructural Analysis – Fundamentals and Techniques; Introduction to Microstructure and Materials Characterization; Principles of Optical Microscopy, Sample Preparation and Etching; Principles of SEM, Electron-Sample Interactions and EDS Analysis; Mechanical Analysis – Properties and Testing; Introduction to Mechanical Properties and Tensile Testing; Hardness Testing: Principles and Applications; Impact Testing: Principles and Applications; Introduction to Fracture Mechanics and Fractography; Advanced Characterization and Failure Analysis; Introduction to X-ray Diffraction and Hands-on Practical and Fractography Using SEM.
The Overseeing Officer, who expressed her satisfaction with the participants’ engagement and the workshop’s overall success also emphasized the importance of applying the knowledge gained to provide solutions to the real-world problems and encouraged participants to continue exploring the field of materials science.
The highlight of the workshop was the issuance of certificates to participants, acknowledging their commitment to learning and professional development.

The Prototype Engineering Development Institute (PEDI) Ilesa, Osun State, has developed the NASENI ProHatch 300, a game changer in the poultry industry.
The NASENI-PEDI portable poultry Incubator specially designed for poultry farmers, hatchery start-ups, Agri-entrepreneurs and research bodies, with its XM-18D automatic digital Controller ensures precision hatching.
The NASENI ProHatch 300 comes with sophisticated design, automatic temperature control, turning cycles and ventilation giving chicks the perfect start. The average weight of a poultry chick at hatch is averagely 42 grammes.

SEDI-Minna, Niger State Train Women on Biofortified Crops

The Scientific Equipment Development Institute, Minna (SEDI-M), in partnership with the Office of the First Lady of Niger State, has successfully conducted a three-day training programme on biofortified crops.
The training, held at the Muhammadu Buhari Entrepreneurship Centre (MBEDC) from August 25 to 27, 2025, brought together 125 women drawn from all 25 local government areas of Niger State.
The initiative aimed to empower women with practical knowledge and skills in biofortified crop farming and value chain development to enhance nutritional security.
The training had as a theme “From Seeds to Solutions-Biofortified Crops for Nutritional Security”, which underscored the importance of biofortified crops in tackling nutritional deficiencies, improving public health, and promoting sustainable livelihoods.
The Overseeing Officer, SEDI-Minna, Dr. John A. Hemen, stressed the relevance of biofortified crops in addressing pressing nutrition challenges and thanked the Chairman, Niger State Board of Internal Revenue for sponsoring the initiative, and urged trainees to be worthy ambassadors of their communities.
Also speaking, the Coordinator, Muhammadu Buhari Entrepreneurship Centre (MBEDC), Alh. Muhammad Abdullahi, urged participants to seize the opportunity to bridge nutritional gaps in their communities while leveraging agriculture as a tool for wealth creation.
In his closing remarks, Engr. Dr. Mahmoud Jafar commended the participants, facilitators, and sponsors for their contributions. He appealed to the women to put into practice the skills acquired to drive positive change in their communities.
The training marked a significant milestone in advancing nutritional security and women’s empowerment in Niger State, in line with NASENI’s vision for sustainable national development.
HEDI Inaugurates 12-Man Committee on Project Selection

As part of efforts to strengthen project innovation within NASENI, the Hydraulic Equipment Development Institute (HEDI), Kano, has inaugurated a 12-member Project Selection and Implementation Committee.
The committee according to the Overseeing Officer of HEDI Kano, Mr. Ibrahim Maje Adnan, is mandated to identify, review, and drive viable project proposals that align with the Institute’s mandate of developing hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
It will also engage with staff and external partners on innovative ideas, collating proposals, and ensuring strict compliance with NASENI’s local content policy. The committee will also coordinate HEDI’s participation in the ongoing NASENI Innovation Assessment and Award Programme, recently unveiled by the EVC/CEO, Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu.
Mr. Adnan further explained that the committee was established not to exist in name but to serve as a central engine of progress. He therefore called on all members of the committee to carry out their duties with integrity, diligence, courage, and collaboration.
EMDI Marks 30th Anniversary with Glamour, Intellectual Engagement and Celebration

The Engineering Materials Development Institute (EMDI), Akure, on Wednesday 13th August 2025, celebrated its 30th anniversary with a colourful and memorable ceremony that combined fun, glamour, and intellectual discourse.
The event, held at the Institute’s premises, reflected three decades of commitment to technological innovation, capacity building, and national development.
In her welcome address, the Overseeing Officer, EMDI, Mrs. Fausat Olumide Yusuf, highlighted the Institute’s 30-year journey of innovation, strategic partnerships and contributions to Nigeria’s technological growth, where a 5-minute documentary produced by the Information, New Media & Protocol Unit titled “EMDI So Far” showcased the Institute’s growth and milestones over the years.
Delivering the anniversary lecture, the guest speaker, Engr. Prof. Sesan Peter Adedeji, delivered an engaging lecture titled, “Creation, Collaboration & Commercialisation: The Triple Helix Powering NASENI-EMDI’s 30-Year Journey Towards Nigeria’s Technology Development.”
He emphasized that the fusion of creation, collaboration and commercialisation is essential for achieving meaningful technological breakthroughs. He cited global and local examples of how synergistic partnerships have driven innovation and urged stakeholders to deepen such efforts in Nigeria.
Other activities include Award presentation to members of staff who joined the Institute between 1996 and 1999, in recognition of their long-standing service and contributions. The Engineering and Technical Services Department received the trophy for winning the indoor games competition organised in commemoration of the anniversary.
